According to Weiss, “ ... about 40% of my patients need to delve into other lifetimes to resolve their current life clinical problems.”
This statement suggests that although 3 in 5 people with a problem can generally be helped to overcome the problem in a conventional psychoanalytic  manner - that is , by investigation of earlier current life experiences, usually in childhood - as many as 2 in 5 people require a more ‘in depth’ investigation of their psyche in order to gain a more complete resolution.
A more in depth investigation of the individual’s psyche, or mind, is what Past Life Regression provides.
Regression brings the individual to a highly focused state of awareness, a mental state that has relaxed the constantly thinking, analytical, reasoning, conscious mind we refer to as the ‘ego’.  The ego deals with waking reality.  It provides protective behaviours for us to follow when the environment becomes threatening and it uses logic and reason, together with reference to current life experiences, for problem solving and planning.  Regression quiets the ego’s procession of thoughts, thereby enabling the ‘inner self’ to provide one’s awareness with some thoughts and ideas of its own.
Whereas the ego faces outwards onto the world of objective reality - towards the physical - the inner self is the face of your psyche that looks inward to the subjective realities of one’s spiritual realm - towards the non-physical.  The inner self can also be thought of as the ‘inner ego’, the portion of us that deals with all the phenomena that are not an obvious part of our waking reality, not the concern of the outer ego/conscious mind.  The inner self deals with that which we keep ‘below’ conscious awareness - the ‘sub’-conscious.
In regression attention moves away from the conscious mind and is focused upon the  subconscious mind.  This portion of our selves, amongst other things, contains a vast library of knowledge pertaining to one’s Self.  Information ranging from what we had for breakfast on this day five years ago to how we behave when confronted with a spider, is stored on the shelves of the subconscious library.  And the categorising of this comprehensive array of information is not done simply by chronological sequencing - as the subconscious realises that time is but relative - but with a primary appreciation of the degree of energy the item has been bestowed with.
Energy accrued to information within the subconscious library is what matters most to the inner self.  This is because it is the inner self that monitors the energy distribution within the subconscious and attempts to bring imbalances or concentrations to the awareness of the conscious mind.  Regression allows the inner self to relay information from the subconscious library to the conscious awareness of the individual.
When the individual becomes consciously aware of information that is associated with energy
imbalances or concentrations within the psyche, more often than not, a spontaneous therapeutic effect takes place.
So for 3 in 5 people with a problem, regression to childhood events within the current lifetime, perhaps as far back as the moment of birth, or even in uterus prior to birth, may provide enough information pertaining to energy complications within the psyche.  Recall of the events, awareness and understanding of the moments and issues that lead to energy being subconsciously accrued begins the therapeutic process.
Past Life Therapy follows this same principle of making the conscious mind aware of information within the subconscious library.  Only for 2 in 5 people the information does not pertain to the current lifetime.  It would appear that the breadth of knowledge within the subconscious stretches far beyond the details of the life being led.  Provided a reasonably deep level of hypnotic trance is achieved, a great deal of information can be forthcoming by guiding the individual beyond the current lifetime.  The presented information takes varying formats, but on the whole can usually be regarded as the synopsis of another lifetime.
Of course, many would suggest that the information recalled is a process of the imagination, perhaps associated to hallucinations, but whatever the explanation, the therapeutic effect is still maintained.  And quite frankly, if the method is of value to a healing process, then it really does not matter how the information is formulated.
What’s the point of exploring or investigating so-called past lives?
Discovering other lifetimes through regression does not have to be focused on therapy; it can be used to fully appreciate and understand the breadth of one’s entire Being - one’s ‘Whole’ Self.  Not just the little focus self that is currently embroiled within physical reality at the start of the 21st Century.  But the Whole Self - with a capital ‘S’ - the ‘Essence’ Self that encompasses your ego, your inner self, your subconscious, and the numerous minds and focus selves that are facets of who you are in totality.
Regression is a means for exploring the expansive Self.  This can be a voyage of discovery that can bring great confidence to your current self, a heightened sense of self-esteem and integrity that can reverberate through the many selves that contribute to your Essence Self.
If the individual has reached a stage in life where the big questions such as - ‘What is my life’s purpose?’; ‘How can I change the world?’; ‘How can I gain fulfilment from my life?’; or even the classic cliché ‘What’s the meaning of life?’ - begin to actually concern them, then Past Life Regression may well provide the answers to at least some of these existential propositions.
(Reading one or two of the books provided by channelled information sources below can begin an awakening process to understanding one’s Whole Self or Essence Self.)

There are really two main reasons why one might wish to experience Past Life Regression.
The first reason would be in order to hopefully resolve an issue of concern - for the experience to therefore be therapeutic in nature.  And the second reason would be on the basis of curiosity - for the experience to be investigative or exploratory.
To fully appreciate the therapeutic value of Past Life Regression it is recommended that one read at least one or two of the books of Dr. Brian Weiss, the leading authority on the process and facilitator of literally thousands of therapeutic sessions.  (A list of his works are at the foot of the page.)
